Your roommate’s cat may have a urinary tract infection (UTI). Majority of the time, when cats pee in weird places, it is not because of rebeliousness or “acting out”, but because there is something medically wrong. UTI is caused by ingredients (magnesium and ash) in low quality cat foods, which they don’t really need. The cat’s system responds by creating uric acid crystals in the urine, which scratch and irritate the lining of the bladder and uretra. This causes pain, and the cat’s system then begins creating sludge-like substance that starts to build up in the urethra. If the urethra becomes completely blocked, it will kill the cat very quickly. UTI’s are more common in male cats than females.

I would advise that your roommate take the cat to the vet ASAP to see if he has a UTI. If he does, the vet can flush out his system and make it clean again. They may try to sell you some expensive “prescription diet” food that is supposed to prevent UTI. IT’s not necessary to buy that expensive stuff from the vet unless you want to. If you go to the pet store or feed store and read the ingredients/content labels on the cat food bags, you can find some that don’t have magnesium and ash in them at all, and any food of that sort will be fine. Some foods even say on the package that they are designed for urinary tract health. Despite expensive prices and fancy packaging of “gourmet foods”, I still see plenty of them that contain magnesium and/or ash. Don’t be fooled by an expensive price or fancy bag. Read the ingredients, and pick a food without harmful ash and magnesium.

You also need to thoroughly clean any places the cat has peed. Just because you can’t smell the pee anymore doesn’t mean he cant. Remember, their noses are far more powerful than ours. If they smell even the slightest bit of urine left over from where they peed before, they will think it’s OK to keep peeing there in the future. To kill cat pee smells for good, thoroughly soak the urine spot with a combination of plain white vinegar and club soda water. If you don’t have soda water, that’s OK, the vinegar will work fine on it’s own. If the spot is on a carpet, cover the vinegar with layers of newspapers or paper towels, and place something heavy on top of the papers, such as a stack of books. Be sure to protect your books from the moisture with a plastic bag. If the pee is on an upright spot, such as a wall, from the cat spraying, then you can use a spray bottle to spray the vinegar on the area. Leave everything on there and let the vinegar dry on the spot. The acid pH of the vinegar will counterbalance the alkaline pH of the urine, thus killing the smell for good, and it should prevent kitty from peeing there again. Vinegar stinks a bit, but it’s not as bad as cat pee smell! This really works good, I have used this trick for years. They also sell special cleaners for this in pet stores, the most common one is called Nature’s Miracle. I have never tried it because the vinegar trick works great, and you can find a gallon of vinegar for not much money at all.

There is also a spray you can buy in pet stores called Feliway. It mimics cat facial pheremone scents, and helps keep them from spraying. Facial pheremone scent makes cats feel happy and relaxed, and they won’t spray where there’s facial scents. If the cat is not neutered, then that is why he is spraying. Un-neutered male tom cats spray-mark their territory as part of their mating instinct. When they get neutered, this most often stops the spraying problem. Your roommate should get his cat neutered if he has not done so already. This will also prevent him from roaming, getting into fights, and getting female cats pregnant.

Good luck, I hope this helps =^.^=
